Our Own Way

Our Own Way is an exhibition that navigates fugitive time, tracing winding paths of escape, return, and reimagination. It follows the footsteps of those who escaped colonial times and carved new temporal geographies through rituals, memory, and care. These paths, though absent from official maps, remain inscribed in gesture and the quiet, ancestral knowledge passed from hand to hand.

Among those who created and walked these trails were the cimarrones, who escaped enslavement and established palenques—settlements within nature, near rivers, on remote hills, where they could make a community, be safe, be taken care of, and, above all else, be free. However, they did not stand alone then, nor do they now. Grandmothers kept stories woven and folded in cloth while healers listened to time from the ground up, forming a larger route that transcended multiple realities, drawn on the stars, scars, and braids. Fugitive time, a time of resistance, was practiced by these ancestors along loops and spirals. Our Own Way walks alongside this non-linear temporality. It is not about the past as a fixed document, but about what remains, pulsing forward, insisting on becoming.
